A multi-disciplined team at SCJ embraced both challenges and opportunities for this unique project near the old Olympia Brewery property in Tumwater.
The desire to have the City of Tumwater again be known as a center of excellence for things like brewing, cidermaking and distilling was a catalyst for creating this collaborative partnership.
Amazing Amenities & Events Space
With roughly 30,000 total square feet, the initial three-story building will be home to Heritage Distilling Company and South Puget Sound Community College’s new brewing and distilling program. In the future, other site amenities are expected to include a market building, a brewery, a cidery, offices, restaurants, and an amphitheater with a capacity of 1,000 people.
Careful Planning To Mitigate Impacts
SCJ is providing civil engineering and transportation design services for the entire site, including designing sewer and water systems, complex traffic and site reroutes, and a new intersection for Tumwater’s primary corridor. Being near the Deschutes River, a Habitat Protection Plan for the project was also created by SCJ, which outlines impacts on the river’s shoreline and steps to mitigate them.
Traffic Flow Designed To Include Future Uses
The design for traffic flow took into consideration both current and potential future uses. Realignments, a new intersection and a new road are all part of the final design, which accommodates needs related to safety, business needs, visitor parking, pedestrians, and delivery trucks.
SCJ is also working with Puget Sound Energy to provide underground power, cable, and telephone along the project’s frontage. With an eye toward future use, SCJ worked with the City to bring almost 2,000 feet of new water main extension to the site.
